Why vegans must speak up
It’s important for vegans to keep speaking up.
Because people don’t know what they don’t know.
Twelve years ago, I hardly knew what a vegan was.
Five years ago, I didn’t know what minimalism was.
Three years ago, I didn’t know what zero waste was all about.
Thank goodness for the people who kept speaking up.
Sure, my immediate reaction was defensive. I probably uttered some ridiculous remarks about vegans subsisting on lettuce and minimalists owning only what fit into a single backpack.
But it’s because of those who chose to continue sharing a message, that the defensiveness crumbled, and critical thinking set in.
As activists, we’re going to encounter people’s psychological defenses. We will inevitably be on the receiving end of defensiveness, stubbornness, ridicule, and hostility.
It’s important that we peacefully persevere with our message, whatever that looks like for us.
People’s defenses cannot last forever, especially when they’re built on a shaky foundation of exploitation, deceit, and fear.
